The ParaTrack Steering Tool is the heart of the Vector Magnetics Suite of HDD tools, performing three essential roles:

  • Provides real-time toolface to the driller, allowing the borehole to be drilled directionally.
  • Surveys borehole position magnetically.
  • Receives signals from other ParaTrack Guidance sources.

Borehole location may be determined via Steering Tool surveys alone, however “un-guided” steering like this does not generally provide the precision required of modern horizontally drilled product installations as survey data compounds in error as total drilling length increases.

Vector Magnetics provides a number of solutions that improve the accuracy with which the location of the borehole may be tracked.

ParaTrack2 AC wire guidance is the gold standard in HDD pilot bore locating. P2 places a light-gauge wire on surface or in an adjacent pilot bore or shut-down installation. The wire’s position is surveyed and therefore known with a high degree of certainty. While the bore is drilled underneath or parallel to the P2 wire, the new borehole position is verified via magnetic signal by referencing this known point, with locating accuracy of 2% distance between wire and probe and depth capabilities extending to nearly 1,500’.
