Single Wire Guidance

Single Wire GuidanceThe Vector Magnetics Single Wire Guidance (SWG) system uses a standard MWD tool or Vector Magnetics' own tools to measure the distance and direction to another well.  Surface access to the target well is required.

An insulated wire (wireline or an existing instrument wire in the completion) is deployed in the existing well and an electromagnetic signal from the wire is detected by the MWD or Vector Magnetics probe.  Vector Magnetics software analysis of data allows the determination of proximity of the drilling well to the Single Wire.  Single Wire Guidance is an extremely effective method for well avoidance, as separation distance and bearing are continuously calculated from MWD measurements in the drilling well during approach and passing of the interfering well.  As the SWG is an active AC measurement, it is not affected by the magnetic interference of the nearby well, allowing safe transit, even when MWD measurements are corrupted.

  • Benefits of the Single Wire Guidance system:
  • Greater than 200 ft. detection range
  • No interruption to drilling - uses standard MWD tools
  • No interruption to production from interfering well
  • Optimize ERD well profiles
  • Bundling wells with a single gyro surveyed guide well reduces surveying needs
  • Relative wellbore surveying reduces inter-well position uncertainty within the reservoir
