Passive Magnetic Ranging

Passive Magnetic RangingVector Magnetics Passive Magnetic Ranging (PMR) provides real time proximity data for the driller. Utilizing data output from the customer's existing MWD tools, Vector Magnetics PMR software provides distance and direction information without requiring tripping for open hole logs. Passive Magnetic Ranging can be used for relief wells, well avoidance, parallel wells or any application that requires real time navigation of a nearby target.

Passive Magnetic ranging is achieved by analyzing three component gravity and magnetic data over a range of measured depths to estimate the location and orientation of the target relative to the drilling well. Single poles at the beginning or end of a fish, or the beginning or end of casing stubs have provided well resolved distance and direction. Single pole signatures can appear randomly throughout a string of casing or drill pipe, due to random magnetization of individual sections. Resolution along the body of the target string depends on a number of factors, including the distribution of magnetization along the target, so it can sometimes be difficult to give an accurate estimate of range.

Maximum detection range: 5-10m depending on total target well magnetization.
