Case History: Multiple Relief Wells

Multiple relief wells intersect an offshore blowout:

Multiple blowouts on an offshore production platform left at least two wells burning. Two simultaneous relief well projects from separate locations were deemed necessary for a successful kill operation. Technical considerations included hole inclinations approaching 50°.

Wellspot guided the drilling to intersection operation, enabling the successful kill and cementing of both blowouts. Well "C" was intersected first at ~2000 meters MD. After establishing communication through pre-existing perforations in the target well, mud was pumped to surface and the well was cemented. The main fire on the production platform continued until well "D" was Intersected at ~2225 meters MD. A hole was milled into the target casing, resulting in immediate communication with the blowout. Mud was circulated through the hole in the casing to the surface, killing the well and fire.
